Northern Cyprus: import and export of pets. Full guide

04 September 2023

Moving or traveling to another country with your furry pet always requires advance preparation. Northern Cyprus is no exception. Transportation of animals to this country is not particularly difficult. However, there are a few important steps you can take to avoid unnecessary stress for both you and your pet.

Importing a pet into Northern Cyprus

5 easy steps to transport your pet:

1️⃣ Prepare an international veterinary certificate (passport), with the animal’s chip number and the date of implantation, all vaccinations due to the age of the animal, including rabies vaccination for at least a month before the date of travel.

2️⃣ Do a rabies antibody titer test. You must meet the deadline at least one month from the date of the rabies vaccination and no later than two months before the expiration date.

3️⃣ Health examination 24 hours before exportation.

4️⃣ Obtain a license to import an animal into Northern Cyprus. Send scans of all documents and the completed import application to [email protected] and [email protected]. The license will be sent back to your email within 24 hours.

Download the application for the import of an animal from the website of the State Veterinary Service of the TRNC:

http://veteriner.gov.ct.tr/Formlar

You can find the current form in the “KARANTİNA” section.

5️⃣ Upon arrival in Northern Cyprus, show the Animal Import License and pay the fee in cash in Turkish Lira.

Remember that a seat on board the aircraft must be booked in advance, as the number of animals in the cabin cannot be more than two. In addition, antagonistic animals, such as cats and dogs, are not allowed together on the board.

Airline transportation rules may vary, so check in advance all questions with the company you plan to fly with.

Force majeure situations when importing a pet to Northern Cyprus

Do not be upset if the license to import an animal wasn’t sent to you – the procedure will simply take longer. You will be asked to either fill out the application again at the airport of arrival, or come to the TRNC Veterinary Department in person.

In case of more serious problems with the documents, the animal will be taken to quarantine, the duration of which depends on the reasons. The stay of the pet in quarantine is paid by the owner. The conditions for keeping pets are not the best, so we advise you not to bring such a situation to a similar situation and carefully prepare all the documents in advance.

Export of a pet from Northern Cyprus

In order to take a pet out of the country, you need to contact the state veterinary service of your area 3 days before traveling and get a certificate for crossing the border. This document is valid for 5 days, and costs 80 TL in 2023.

To obtain a permit to export an animal from the territory of Northern Cyprus, you need to provide the following documents:

1️⃣ Veterinary passport with all necessary vaccinations

2️⃣ Rabies titer certificate

3️⃣ Previously obtained permission to import an animal (if you had it previously)

Important: the transportation of any pets from Northern Cyprus to Southern Cyprus is prohibited. According to the law, in case of capture, the animal must be euthanized, so we do not recommend taking any risks!
